My wife's doing heaps of overtime this weekend, and I've been sat here staring at a spreadsheet for several hours trying to motivate myself. It's due next week, time is short, and I'll regret it if I don't do it. Trouble is, I've already worked most evenings this week and it's all beginning to catch up with me.

Quite clearly the thing to do is procrastinate!

Tom McRae now has a blog, McRaetheism. As usual he's walking that fine line between deadpan comedy and soul-destroying nihilism. He also has a couple of new song demos up on his myspace page.

We've belatedly been catching up with The Middleman, which is exactly the kind of cheesy, heightened-reality pop-culture-drenched romp that the world needs more of; it's sort of what you'd get if The Avengers and Buffy Season 1 had a messy car accident. How can you not love a show in which the finale features an evil parallel universe, goatee beards and an impression of Snake Plissken from Escape from New York? Plus it apparently meets the bechdel rule. It's *so* going to get cancelled.

Tonight sees the debut of the BBC's Merlin in the Doctor Who / Robin Hood family slot. I'm not optimistic, but it does have Tony Head in it. And a dragon.

Thought for the Day: no matter how large or crowded the supermarket car park, someone is always trying to get into or out of the car right next to yours.

Merlin also has Richard Wilson and, going by the trail, Will Mellor - which is a serious collision of acting worlds...

I'm going to watch - its supposed to be better than Robin Hood (could hardly be worse) and considerably less po-faced. BTW - SJA starts again soon - so probably worth setting the Sky+.

Cool. SJA did improve a fair bit over its first season, I thought.

You've reminded me that The Middleman did an episode full of obscure Doctor Who references, including "McCrimmon College", something called "Periperpugilliam", and a bit-part character called Lethbridge-Stewart. All entirely irrelevant to the episode, but fun shout-outs nontheless.

As I understand it, they did have to end the current season an episode early because they ran out of money/the network cut their budget, but a second season has been ordered now.

Also, Merlin will be complete shit. Of course it will. Everyone knows this. The only question is will it be amusingly bad shit, or will it be "OH GOD MAKE THE HURTING STOP!" shit?

I think it depends where they pitch it tbh. The problem with Robin Hood was that it was trying to be a political parable and generally ended up rather dull. If they pitch it at a similar level to Doctor Who (i.e. very family friendly fantasy adventure) it'll probably be lots of fun but completely disposable. Given that you've got ASH and Richard Wilson I think the chances of it being well acted by the adult cast are pretty high. We just have to hope the kids playing Merlin and Arthur aren't shockingly bad.

The first part I'd heard, but do you have any sources for the second?

I thought I'd seen it mentioned on a blog post somewhere, but I can't find it again. So I could be completely barking up the wrong tree. Or readingfollowing too many blogs.

Also, *empathy* for the spreadsheet procrastination.
