Signs of the Apocalypse:

Keanu Reeves stars as Klaatu in a remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Tim Minear makes a series about a TV Evangelist.

Kevin Smith directs Battlestar Galactica.

The X-Files 2 movie actually gets made.

BBC Buffy spin-off Ripper actually gets made. Probably.

No, really.

The Kevin Smith/BSG mashup threw me initially. But then I realized that I don't think of Smith primarily as a director. It's his writing that's distinctive, not his directing (I can't even imagine what a Smith-written episode of BSG would be like). I don't see what he'd bring to BSG besides his geek cred (and vice versa, I suppose).

And boy, you just can't keep Tim Minear down, can you? At least this show won't air on Fox.

And boy, you just can't keep Tim Minear down, can you?

As the article mentions, he had a deal for n shows with Fox, where n is a number I don't actually know; so he kept getting airlifted onto projects that weren't actually his (Wonderfalls, The Inside and Drive all fall into this category). I keep waiting for him to be allowed to develop an idea of his own ...

I didn't know that. So what's he done that's his?

I'm not sure he's done anything that's purely his.

Though as I understand it The Inside and Drive were fairly heavily retooled after he came on board, and he seems to have had a reasonable amount of creative input into Angel circa S2-4.

Nothing? :-)

To be fair he reworked The Inside from the ground up, keeping only the title and those cast members who'd already been hired (the original show was about a female FBI office undercover at a High School).

Wonderfalls he only came in as showrunner after the pilot, likewise Firefly.

I'm not sure how heavily he was involved in the premises of Drive or Miracle, although it does sound from the article as if Miracle partly draws on his childhood experience.

You're right, I'd forgotten exactly how much work he did on The Inside. I thought that the basic premise of Drive was in place when he started work on that, but he did quite a lot of character revision.

No, their relationship is much too healthy for BSG.

He shoots, he scores!

I still like Cylon and Garfunkel.

Still sounds pretty doubtful, doesn't it? I mean, they've been talking about it for years now.

It depends. The trouble with Keanu is that even in superficially similar roles (e.g. Neo and Johnny Mnemonic) his acting is so very variable. He does have a slightly off-kilter quality that might, I say *might*, work in this part. Not as much as Johnny Depp but he could potentially pull off that "from another planet" vibe.

Alas, Keanu can vary from "from another planet" to "not quite left that planet yet".

True. But if you imagine them casting, say, Will Smith in the role then on a relative scale I think Keanu may work out okay. Depending upon which planet he's on at the time.

The trouble is that Brian Blessed could bring more of the required subtlety to the role the KR.

Not that it really matters - they'll arse up the script anyway.

And now, apparently, the Smith-directed BSG episode is off due to scheduling conflicts. He is, however, writing and directing an episode of Heroes, which is probably more his sort of thing.
