The fan itself is a good example of just how narrowly the episode walked the line between "fun" and "ridiculous".
That made me laugh - I'm sure it was a poke at the obligatory 'game' moment that seems to be in all Sci Fi flicks these days. They did something very similar in Galaxy Quest :)
